Rakiura Museum

Rakiura Museum has relocated to a new purpose-built building at 11 Main Road.

The exhibition displays are currently in the process of development and will open to the public on 1st December 2020.


Opening hours after this date will be 10.00am - 3.00pm daily.                                                  

Other times by arrangement for schools and special interest groups (minimum 6 people.)

Entry:  Adults $10     |     Children (15 & under) no charge


A visit to Stewart Island isn't complete without a browse through the Rakiura Museum, located at 11 Main Road.

The museum houses an extensive collection of items and photographs of Stewart Island's early history, including Maori settlement; muttonbirding; whaling; fishing; timber milling; mining; boat building; transport; schools and churches. Included in the exhibits is an extensive collection of Stewart Island shells and crustacea.
