Community Centre

The impressive Stewart Island Community Centre was opened on 19 September 1999, after six years of planning and fundraising.

The centre represents enormous commitment from the local community and their supporters in Invercargill. Dedicated fundraising and volunteer labour enabled the Islanders to build a community centre with a high quality finish, well equipped to cater for current and future needs of the islanders and its visitors. A feature of the centre is the beautiful wooden flooring, which, along with the rest of the wood in the building, was milled by volunteer labour using a donated sawmill.

Located in central Halfmoon Bay (Oban), it is an ideal venue for an educational exchange, a conference (of up to 250 people), a social function, team building weekend, a workshop, a crafts display, a theatrical production, or sports event. The Community Centre is wheelchair accessible.

Visitors to the island are welcome (for a small fee) to play squash, or use the stadium or weights room. You may wish to join with the locals in a game of basketball, volleyball or netball - with the limited numbers on the island, new participants are always welcome.
