Unleash your creative self at the 2019 Rakiura art programme weekend. High quality, experienced tutors from around New Zealand utilise the inspiring and unique surrounds of Stewart Island/Rakiura to provide an unforgettable learning experience. A diverse choice of four workshops are on offer this year:
Textile printing: Kate Smith has been working with fabric in one way or another all her life. From clothes to interiors to conceptual art, she has always been fascinated by the power of fabric to transform places, spaces and people.
Singing together for fun: Robyn Bardas has been the Choir leader of Wanakapella and Hawea Flat Out Singers on and off for the last 8 years. Her classes are fun and expansive, and build up gently through a wonderful repertoire of songs.
Harakeke: Amber Bridgman‘s whakapapa is of Rakiura Maori descent. She is a traditional Maori Weaver and also an award winning fashion designer (KAHUWAI). Maori traditional arts have always been at the foundation of Amber's inspiration throughout her working life and with her designs.
Astrophotography: Les Ladbrook is a very enthusiasic photographer, with a passion for the Night Sky and Landscape photography. He is a member of the Southland Photographic Society and is passionate about passing on his knowledge.

Rakiura, the Maori name for Stewart Island, translates as ‘land of the glowing skies”. But it is also home to lush native bush, spectacularly rugged coastlines, abundant bird and sea life, and one of New Zealand’s famous “Great Walks”.
For the first time, the Rakiura Great Walk will host a “great run” - welcome to New Zealand’s southern-most trail run, the Rakiura Challenge.
The 33.7k traverse is usually a two or three day walk. But participants in the inaugural event will take in the historic Maori trails, colonial logging sites and spectacular bush and beaches in the course of a single day.
The Rakiura Challenge is destined to be a must-do event. But don’t take our word for it….
Registrations for the Rakiura Challenge Trail Run are now full! Please visit the Rakiura Challenge trail run page for details of a waiting list and how to register as a supporter.
